Learning English Language Strategies for Culturally Diverse Learners By Belle2019年9月21日

English is becoming the world’s universal language and we have to admit that English is everywhere. It is the language of everything. Since English is taking over, what should we do then as a newbie in the said language? It is quite hard for others to least have a better understanding of it, and what more to speak of it?

A lot of diverse learners are finding it more difficult to learn English language, to the fact that English grammatical structure is totally different from their mother tongue’s language. Speaking English or even understanding it is mostly considered as a struggle to someone who has diverse culture.

Here are the few ways then on how a newbie can encourage himself to learn, improve and be confident when using English.

A)

Always keep in mind that it may take quite longer time to improve oneself because learning such language is a continuous process. The fastest progress can be totally observed when the learner is beginner. Never ever think of quitting because you have known from yourself that you improved a bit. Keep on learning! Learning English can be compared in exercising in a gym that you keep on doing to make yourself physically fit and it is exactly the same as learning; as you continuously doing it, you can impart knowledge that would be more beneficial for your own sake. Try to consider language learning as a long term goal therefore you can focus on working towards it.

B)

Practice every day. There must be several ways that you can use to practice English language on a daily basis. Try to use variety of strategies on how you can at least use English every day even in a short time. The problem that always occurs in our mind is that “How can I start?” or “I do not know where and when to start.” Look around you and you can simply think of a simple way on how you can practice the language itself. Use everything you can see around you by describing it using English vocabularies or even try to use it as your subject in a sentence. See quite simple, right? Try to make your own study plan. By making such useful plan you will never be bored yet find it more interesting to use English once it becomes a habit. If you take some break then from Speaking or learning English, you will notice that your level will be coming back to your initial level and for the worse, as a possible outcome of taking such break from learning is our effort and hard work will just be wasted.

C)

Why don’t you take a lesson at least once a week? In a day lesson there would be someone who can guide you up and there would be someone you can talk to in English. There is someone who can explain you all the things that made you confused when you are trying to be familiar with English. Once actually may be so short when you are totally determined in enhancing your skills. The good point of this strategy is that you will always look forward to having the lesson more as the last time you studied together is that not enough for you to express more of that thoughts that you have inside you. Believe me, it’s effective!

D)

Don’t push yourself to level up too soon. The main problem of doing so is that you might lose your track and fall into chaos. Concentrate on the level that you have now. For this reason, you will know what field or part of English you need to prioritize then for learning. You can even find it more enjoyable to learn step by step. You can learn by heart not by pressuring yourself to input all the knowledge that you really wanted to know.

E)

As a diverse learner, what is your dilemma in terms of understanding English language? I know that of the difficulties that culturally diverse learners might face is to catch the thought of what someone is saying. Being a newbie to learn English language, you are trying all your best to understand the meaning or the thought of the sentence by translating it word by word from your own language. I strongly suggest “Don’t do that!’ Don’t ever translate English from your own language. If you do, the thought may sometimes change and it made you feel confused more. Try to think in English and it will also help you improve your fluency. It may be hard in the beginning, but once guided everything will go smoothly. Have you ever tried to talk to yourself? Do it, do it in front of the mirror for you to be able to see how you open your mouth when you are pronouncing some English words.

F)

What about taking an English course in an English speaking country. Try to imagine yourself staying in an English speaking country and let yourself be exposed in an environment where you can hear English the most. This will be helpful for you to learn passively. Once you are there, you will even exert more effort to be familiar with the language. It is normal to be scared at first as if that you are facing your terror teacher in school when you were studying. However, as time goes by this fear that you have had in the beginning will slowly be gone as if that the terror teacher you have met also became as your guide to be a better version of yourself. When you have already decided where to stay abroad to study English, you can create an atmosphere where you want to practice, not because you have to, but because you are determined enough with the willingness to do so.

G)

Meeting people is a challenging task, but it assures you that it would be a big help as well for you to enhance your communication skills. When you meet a stranger, foreigner as an example. Be the one to start a conversation in English. Do you know any expressions that would keep the conversation going? When talking with someone, try to give some follow up questions then. Most conversations start with a question such as “How are you today?’ “Where have you been?” “Are you okay?’ and so on. Think more of your own experiences when you were learning English, it all started with that right? And you didn’t realize that you are opening a new topic then.

H)

No confidence yet? Well why don’t you practice with a friend of yours? Having someone you can practice with comfortable is another good way to enhance your skills. Set such rules on how you are going to practice together. The simple way I have ever experienced is that when I was in university. As I was taking English course, my best friend and I had to deal with each other that we are not going to use our own language when we were together. And for someone who tried to use our own language will be penalized. The penalty must be simple things or tasks, but as time goes by the punishment is getting serious for one of us has to treat the other one an expensive meal or other things. Practicing English language with a friend of yours can totally be challenging but the assurance to get motivated is also there.

I)

Review? Yes, review is a necessary thing. It allows you to recall all of the important information that you have learned. Please make sure that once you review, you also have to put in into use. Reviewing without applying is a useless thing. While reviewing, practice it then.

J)

Last but not the least, use English whenever you can! It might be easier said than done. For someone who has the strong determination to do something, trying it wherever or even whenever someone could be will always be easy and simple.

Are you still thinking of the difficulty on how you can help yourself to enhance your skills? Then read the above ways once again for you to be able to realize there are always some reasons or passible ways to every difficulty we are facing. You can at least start by trying the easiest and most convenient way for you. When I was a newbie, I had the difficulty too, but I also improved by doing what I think would help me – PRACTICE. “A dream doesn’t become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work.”
